Wafi-Golpu copper-gold resource now a billion tonnes

Harmony Gold Mining upgraded the resource estimate for its Wafi-Golpu project in Papua New Guinea on Wednesday increasing it by 57% to over 1 billion metric tons, making it one of the highest grade copper-gold porphyry systems in South East Asia. CEO Graham Briggs said it was a "game-changing asset" for the company and the latest drilling results bring the Wafi-Golpu deposits within sight of Freeport-McMoran’s Grasberg mine across the border in West Papua, Indonesia, which was recently hit by strikes.

BHP posts annual production records

BHP Billiton Ltd says it achieved production records in four commodities in 2010/11, with production of iron ore posting its 11th consecutive record. BHP said annual production of iron ore was 134.406 million tonnes (MT), up eight per cent on 2009/10.

Chinese investor plans Meridian takeover

NineMSN reports that shares in Meridian Minerals (ASX:MII)jumped after a Chinese state-owned entity, revealed plans to takeover: Shares in Meridian Minerals jumped after the junior explorer's largest shareholder, a Chinese state-owned entity, revealed plans for a $67.5 million takeover offer. Meridian shares were up one cent, or 8.7 per cent, at 12.5 cents at 1343 AEST after an earlier high of 13 cents.

Zinc gains on weak US dollar

Zinc prices gained on falling Dollar and rising EURO on the back of easing tensions of US quantitative easing. Dollar has so far lost 82 pips and is trading at 1.418 per EURO.

Concentrator contract award for big new Russian copper project

Outotec has been awarded another concentrator contract with Russian Copper Co. for the Miheevsky project with throughput of 18 million tonnes of ore a year. Finnish headquartered metallurgical specialist Outotec has signed a contract with ZAO Miheevsky Image from Outotec shows Kittilä gold mine, Finland.

Copper gains on dollar, China demand hopes

Copper hit its highest since mid-April on Tuesday as a weaker dollar and hopes Chinese demand will remain firm helped offset investor anxiety over US and European sovereign debt concerns. Three-month copper on the London Metal Exchange (LME) traded at $9,800.25 a tonne by 0825 GMT compared with Monday's close of $9,694 a tonne.
