Egypt has lifted a ban on the export of gold due to increasing economic and political stability, the government said in a statement on Saturday. The government decided on Feb. 27 to ban exports of gold until June 30 -- a decision which the statement issued on Saturday said was aimed at "guarding Egyptian national security and to stop smuggling of the country's wealth abroad".

Teck Resources Limited (TSX: TCK.A and TCK.B, NYSE: TCK) announced today that employees at its Elkview operation in southeast British Columbia have ratified a new five-year agreement, replacing an agreement which expired on October 31, 2010. Production at the mine will resume effective Friday, April 8 following a temporary suspension due to strike action taken by Local 9346 of the United Steelworkers of America on January 30, 2011.

The Maitland Mercury has reported that Xstrata Coal has dedicated $320,000 of its corporate social involvement program to help train 14 new apprentices at the Hunter Valley Training Company.

HVTC chairman Milton Morris said the funding they received from Xstrata was always the “strawberry on the cake” for their programs.

“Not only does this money pay the wages of these young apprentices, but after we train them there is a place for them with one of Xstrata’s sub-contractors,” Mr Morris said.

Brazil's Vale (VALE5.SA: Quote), the world's largest producer of iron ore, has made an offer to acquire South African miner Metorex Ltd (MTXJ.J: Quote) for 7.5 billion rand ($1.13 billion), the two companies said on Friday. "Under the terms of the offer, if implemented, the Metorex shareholders will receive a cash consideration of 7.35 rand per share," the companies said in a joint statement.

Gold Fields GFIJ. said on Friday that its attributable group production for the March quarter was expected to decline from the previous quarter to about 830,000 ounces. "As expected production is lower than that achieved in the previous quarter (900,000 ounces), almost entirely due to the customary Christmas break in South Africa, when all mines close for two weeks," it said in a brief guidance for investors.

Newmont Mining Corp , the second-largest gold producer in the world, plans to link its dividend to gold prices, and said it will target to raise production of the precious metal by more than a third by 2017. Denver-based Newmont's shares, which have trailed the Arca Gold Bugs Index since the beginning of the year, rose 4 percent to $58.72 in early trade.

Gunmen killed two workers on Thursday at Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc's giant gold mine in Indonesia's Papua, a province with a simmering separatist movement. A Freeport company spokesman said the shooting by unidentified gunmen, which left the car the two workers were in a blazing wreck, did not affect production at the world's largest gold mine.

Atlantic Coal plc, the AIM listed open cast coal production and processing company with activities in Pennsylvania, USA, is pleased to announce a production update for the three months ended 31 March 2011 from the Stockton Colliery (‘Stockton'), its opencast anthracite operation in Pennsylvania. During the quarter, Atlantic mined 120,850 tons of run-of-mine coal (‘ROM') and removed 658,785 bank cubic yards (BCYs) of overburden. 62,000 tons of ROM coal was washed which produced 28,376 tons of clean coal.
