Quake aftermath: Gold futures rise; palladium, platinum fall

Gold futures rose for the second straight session as Japan’s strongest earthquake on record boosted demand for a haven asset, reports Bloomberg. Palladium fell for an eighth straight session, the longest slump since July 2008. Equities declined worldwide as officials said the death toll from the earthquake and tsunami may top 10,000. Technicians tried to contain damage from a second explosion at a nuclear plant north of Tokyo.

Aquarius Platinum: 1,000,000 fatality-free shifts at both Kroondal and Everest

Aquarius Platinum South Africa (Proprietary) Limited ("AQPSA") is pleased to announce that two of its operations have simultaneously achieved one million fatality-free shifts. The Everest Mine reached this milestone on 1 March 2011 for the first time since commencing operations in 2004, while the Kroondal Mine achieved it once again on 4 March 2011.

Franconia Minerals Shareholders Approve Arrangement With Duluth Metals

Franconia shareholders have approved an agreement whereby Duluth will acquire all of the outstanding common shares of Franconia, and Franconia will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Duluth. Franconia's assets are expected to be rolled into Twin Metals Minnesota LLC, a Duluth (60%) and Antofagasta plc (40%) joint venture.

Mapping project by British Columbia Geological Survey identifies “unprecedented opportunities” in new zones and offers insights in Romios’ Dirk/Newmont Lake area Geology

Romios Gold Resources announced that a 2010 mapping project from the British Columbia Geological Survey confirmed Romios' previous claims that the Dirk property mineralization is analogous to and may be as large as the Galore Creek project. Samples collected by Romios from the Dirk property produced numerous anomalous values including a 3.0 metre chip sample of 6.21% Cu, 0.57 g/t Au, and 44.1 g/t Ag. The BCGS also reports values up to 21 ppb platinum and 64 ppb palladium from samples that they collected from the Dirk property.

Stillwater Mining reports highest earnings in a decade

Stillwater Mining Company today reported 2010 net income of $50.4 million, or $0.51 per diluted share, on revenues of $555.9 million. Contributing to the net income in 2010 were higher PGM prices and a recovery in recycling volumes, along with continued focus on productivity and controlling costs.
