HK limo company closer to $931m takeover of two Australian iron ore juniors

Perth-based iron ore junior FerrAus is set to accept Hong Kong limousine and investment company Wah Nam International's $170m takeover offer after the HK company gained a controlling stake in another miner in the region Brockman Resources. ASX-listed FerrAus said last month it will consider reversing its rejection of Wah Nam's bid because of the logic of developing FerrAus and Brockman neighbouring deposits together. Ferraus stock added over 5% on Tuesday, while Brockman had lost more than 12% at the close of the Australian bourse.

De Beers Canada and Mountain Province Diamonds Provide Gahcho Kue Project Update

Gahcho Kué JV partners De Beers Canada Inc. (51%) and Mountain Province Diamonds Inc. (49%) (TSX: MPV) (NYSE AMEX: MDM) today announced that they have:
  • Approved the Gahcho Kué feasibility study with agreed revisions and clarifications;
  • Approved the execution of the necessary development work for the Gahcho Kué project; and
  • Mandated the Gahcho Kué project operator to prepare a plan and budget for the development of the Gahcho Kué mine.
  • The plan and budget, once approved by the JV partners, will serve as the basis for a final investment decision, which is expected to be made once the partners have clarity on the progress of the environmental review currently underway.

New 50% bigger Kalukundi copper/cobalt project study awarded

South Africa's MDM Engineering Group has been awarded the increased throughput design update and cost revalidation of the Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) for Africo Resources' Kalukundi copper/cobalt project, located in the Katanga Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which borders Zambia to the south. In May 2006 MDM completed a BFS, based on a throughput of 800,000 tonne/year plant, on the Kalukundi project.

Glencore shares dip on results, bid denial

Commodities trader Glencore (GLEN.L: Quote) is not considering a bid for embattled miner ENRC, its chief executive said, dismissing reports of a takeover after it disappointed the market with its maiden frst-quarter results. Shares in the world's largest diversified commodity trader dropped 2 percent as weaker-than-expected results from its metals and mining trading unit held back its operating profit.

Jewellers provide support as gold prices bounce

Gold rebounded on Tuesday after posting its biggest one-day loss in a month in the previous session on growing worries about another global economic downturn, but a weaker U.S. dollar and bargain hunting by jewellers offered support. While signs of a cooling Chinese economy could weigh on industrial metals, dealers expect no change in China's appetite for bullion. Investors were also awaiting a trail of U.S. data later in the day which could set the tone for commodities.

Immigration surges as Australia’s mining boom resonates in Europe

About 100 men in their 20s and 30s, filled a conference room at a Dublin hotel last week to hear a migration agent describe the personal fortunes waiting to be made a world away in the booming mining towns of the Australian outback. With unemployment running at close to 15 percent in Ireland, and local wages a fraction of those now on offer in Australia, it appeared to be an easy sell.
