Rainy River
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River mine, located adjacent to the Ontario/Minnesota border is 65 kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. If you enjoy outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, winter sports and lake country then this is an area you will love to live and work in.

About The Role
Schedule: Shift 14/14 – 12-hour days (alternating days and nights. )
Position Reports To : Mill Supervisor
Position Overview
The Lead Hand role is an opportunity for employees who demonstrate strong leadership qualities to further their supervisory experience. The lead hand will also provide leave coverage for the Mill Operations supervisor as needed.
Key Responsibilities - Ensure the safe & efficient operation of all areas in the mill.
- Communicating daily with each crew on their circuit ensuring operators can safely execute their tasks and that essential information is crossed between the crews to the other lead hand.
- Following up with the other lead hand on any cross issues
- Work with supervisor to:
- Lead with a one-company mindset to drive safety and operational excellence
- Role model New Gold values and culture and do so with care, compassion, and concern
- Embrace diversity and build trusting relationships with our Indigenous partners and stakeholders
- Foster innovative thinking to create enduring value

- Assist in shutdown planning, employee training needs and resource planning such as vacation coverage, schedules, and overtime
- Ensure crew maintains acceptable housekeeping in their designated areas and promote teamwork on improvements
- Ensure that maintenance problems identified by the team are recorded and actioned
- Provide leadership to help all crew members be successful
- Understand and apply the information from the Rainy River Supervisors Handbook
- Enter INX, SAP and Work Notifications thoroughly including actions and follow-up
- Collect information post incident and report through to supervisor and management timely and with acceptable initial actions to resolve immediate issues
- Operating and monitoring various circuits in the processing plant as directed by the supervisor.
- Control room, Grinding, Leaching, Detox and Tailings circuits.
- Routine changing of circuits as directed by the supervisor will be required to gain experience and be familiar with changes in plant operation.
- Enhance understanding of all the mill circuits through training, reading, and hands-on experience and focusing on progressing themselves and other team members through the mill operator proficiency system.
- Work at heights and in confined space, operate mobile equipment and overhead crane as required
Qualifications Minimum 3 years mill experience. Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent required ON Mine supervisor surface certification or the ability to complete this. Minimum of a proficient Mill Operator 3 in the Rainy River Progression System (Development Opportunities will be considered if the operator has required hours, and is planned for testing) Demonstrates eagerness and commitment to learn and develop through the mill operator progression system. Demonstrates the necessary leadership potential, in addition to the ability to work in a teamwork-oriented environment under minimal supervision or an equivalent combination of experience To be considered for one of the permanent roles: previous lead hand or supervisory experience is required. Good knowledge of DCS control systems Positive attitude, team player that demonstrates and encourages New Gold's values Demonstrated troubleshooting ability, high mechanical aptitude and ability to lead / explain troubleshooting with the team Ability to manage conflict between their team members and other departments / contractors Eagerness and commitment to help operators learn and develop through the mill operator progression system Ability to be flexible in job tasks and responsibilities so that work is balanced between team members Training in the following areas or a commitment to complete the training as soon as available
