New Afton is situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Position Reports To: Lead Planning Engineer
Position Overview
The successful candidate will be responsible for short‑ and long‑term underground ventilation planning to support safe, efficient mining operations. The role involves developing ventilation plans and schedules, maintaining ventilation models and inventories, conducting audits and field inspections, and coordinating with operations and supporting groups to address deficiencies and improve ventilation performance.
Working Conditions
- Split time between office and field (driving and walking)
- Minimal/occasional lifting required (typically less than 10kgs)
- Team environment, with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings
Key Responsibilities
- Short-term ventilation plans
- Fans, bulkheads, doors, etc.
- Inclusive of plans for partial power outages, shutdowns, etc.
- Identify ventilation opportunities for improvement underground
- Identify high heat, low airflows, leakages, short-circuiting, and recirculation and determine a plan to resolve them.
- Ventilation Audit – complete weekly
- Responsible for following up on any deficiencies and creating a plan to get them resolved
- Deficiencies found should be communicated to ops the same day with the action to rectify it. Ideally new reading should be taken that week after action is complete prior to issuing the audit.
- Monthly Egress Map – responsible for creating the updated map monthly
- Ventilation Materials Inventory – keep inventory of fans and other ventilation materials to ensure supply is sufficient for upcoming construction projects
- Keep Ventsim model updated for both airflows and heat
- Create weekly vent schedules so that development, construction, and production plans can be achieved
- Communicate with supporting groups (electrical, millwrights, construction, development, short-term schedulers) to ensure plans are well coordinated and in the schedule
- Field inspections and QA/QC of ongoing ventilation work – all ventilation plans must be inspected in the field to validate they were completed as per plan and documented accordingly
- Help create JHA’s for work that may be affected by insufficient ventilation/ ventilation impairment
- Help create and update long-term ventilation plans
Qualifications
- Diploma, certificate, or technical training in mining, ventilation or a related field is preferred
- Eligible for registration as a AScT is preferred
- Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Underground mining experience is preferred
- Experience with underground inspections and ventilation is considered an asset
- Experience with VentSim is considered an asset
- Strong observational, organizational, and documentation skills
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Ability to work underground and perform strenuous fieldwork
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of personnel and work independently
- Ability to drive a manual transmission vehicle
- Valid driver’s license required
Other Requirements
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
- Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
- Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
- Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
Compensation
The anticipated salary for this position will be between $75,000 to $94,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
