Job Description
The Mechatronics Engineer plays a vital role in advancing RRL's engineering capabilities and innovations by integrating mechanical, electrical, and software systems. This position is responsible for designing, developing, and implementing sophisticated mechatronic systems for our raiseboring equipment and other mining technologies. The engineer will be involved in various key areas, including design, analysis, research, and development, while upholding the highest standards of safety and professional ethics.
As a key member of our team, the Mechatronics Engineer will collaborate across departments and manage strategic projects that combine multiple engineering disciplines.
Given the interdisciplinary nature of mechatronics, candidates with experience in mechanical engineering, electrical systems, control systems, robotics, or computer science will be particularly valued. Responsibilities
Mechatronics Engineering
- Design and develop integrated mechatronic systems for use in mines or mining equipment.
- Carefully balance cost and risk in all engineering work.
- Design and implement sensor systems and data acquisition techniques for equipment monitoring and control.
- Conduct various analyses and engineering calculations.
- Sign off as Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) on various mechanical drawings, designs and systems.
- Check and approve drawings completed by others.
- Develop and maintain documentation for mechatronic systems, including schematics, control diagrams, and user manuals.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to ensure seamless integration of all system components.
- Enforce and adhere to Redpath's established processes and technical standards.
- Participate in design reviews and implement feedback to improve product designs.
- Stay current with emerging technologies in mechatronics, automation, and control systems relevant to the mining industry.
Research and Development
- Lead or contribute to R&D projects focused on advancing mechatronic and embedded systems in mining equipment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop new products or enhance existing ones using mechatronic principles.
- Research and propose innovative solutions to improve existing equipment and products.
- Assist in the development of prototypes and proof-of-concept designs for mechatronic systems.
Technical Skills and Knowledge Application
- Apply in-depth understanding of mechanical, electronics, and electrical systems.
- Utilize knowledge of mining regulations and safety standards in all work.
- Implement best practices in mechanical engineering to optimize for harsh mining environment.
Software Proficiency
- Proficiency in CAD software, including:
- Contribute to the selection and implementation of new engineering tools and technologies.
- Stay current with advancements in mechatronics design and simulation software.
- Proficiency in programming languages relevant to control, embedded, or data systems (considered an asset).
Qualifications
Education
- Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, or a combination of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering, with eligibility for P.Eng. license, or;
- Equivalent degree from a post-secondary institution, with demonstrably equivalent engineering abilities in mechatronics.
- Preferred:
- Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Mechatronics Engineering or related field, with P.Eng. license.
Work Experience
- Junior or Intermediate:
- Required: 0-3 years postgraduate work, with experience in mechatronics, robotics, automation, or related field in an industrial setting.
- Preferred: 3-5 years postgraduate work, with experience in mechatronics applied to mining or heavy industry.
- Senior:
- Required: 5-10 years in mechatronics, robotics, or automation, preferably in mining environment.
- Preferred: 10+ years in mechatronics, robotics, or automation, preferably in mining environment.
Computer and Software Skills
- Required:
- MS Office Suite.
- Experience with control system programming (e.g., PLCs, microcontrollers).
- Proficiency in at least one high-level programming language.
- Autodesk Suite:
- Inventor (or similar)
- AutoCAD
- Vault
- Considered an asset:
- Use of AI tools.
- Familiarity with electrical systems.
- Familiarity with data acquisition, analysis tools, and statistical modeling.
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git)
