Technological leaps have allowed companies to make large numbers of gem-quality stones inexpensively, with some even touting them as the best “conflict-free” alternative to real diamonds.

This is called CVD (Chemical Vapor deposition) method. Its not the only way to make diamonds in lab. There are another ways to create synthetic diamonds. One is called HPHT (High Pressure, High Temp) method. Another is Crystal pulling method.
