Mining industry warned of fire ant infestation in S. Australia

It sounds like something out of a B movie trailer or if you’re old enough to remember, an episode of Swiss Family Robinson.

Biosecurity SA is warning the mining industry in South Australia of a potential infestation of fire ants following the discovery of hundreds of the stinging pests in a packing crate of imported drilling equipment in Queensland.

The government agency says the industry should be vigilant when unpacking shipments from overseas or from Queensland where fire ants are established.

“If fire ants became established in South Australia they’d potentially affect local communities, manual labour on worksites, restrict outdoor social activities and affect industry, including mining activities,” Stock Journal quotes Biosecurity SA executive director Will Zacharin saying.
