Western Australia Labor Party would ban uranium mining

West Australia's Labor Party says it will ban uranium mining if it gets elected in 2013. The announcement came Friday in the form of a motion by state AMWU secretary Steve McCartney. According to ABC News: The move is set to anger Federal Resource Minister Martin Ferguson, who called the policy ridiculous last month, warning the position is not sustainable and means the state will miss out on funds for schools, education and roads.

Quantum calls on US government to stockpile REEs; investors shorting rare earth stocks

Surging prices of rare earth elements, coupled with slashed export quotas from China, are creating ripples in the rare earths industry, including a call for the US government to start stockpiling the materials. Vancouver-based Quantum Rare Earth Developments Corp. (TSX-V:QRE; OTCQX:QREDF; FRANKFURT:BR3) issued a news release Friday calling on the U.S. to start stockpiling rare earths— voicing support for recent US legislation that directs the Department of Defense to set up an inventory of rare earth oxides, metals, alloys, and magnets for defense purposes.

Environmental groups try to ban asbestos mining in Quebec

Environmental groups in Quebec are calling for an end to asbestos mining, the Montreal Gazette is reporting: Nature Québec, the Société pour Vaincre la Pollution, and Pour que le Quebec ait meilleure mine say asbestos should not be mined because is too dangerous for human health. Asbestos is banned in over 50 countries and is strictly controlled in Canada. Hundreds of workers exposed to asbestos have been diagnosed with lung disease, with many dying an early and painful death. One asbestos victim, Canadian Conservative MP Chuck Strahl, has called on the government to stop exporting asbestos, which is still used in building materials.

New resource estimate could revitalize historic Pickle Crow Mine

One of Canada's most successful, historic gold mines is poised for a renaissance following a new resource estimate that outlines 1.26 million ounces of gold. The updated NI-43101, filed Wednesday by Ottawa-based PC Gold, says the gold is contained in 10.15 million tonnes of ore averaging 3.9 g/t Au. The deposit has a higher-grade underground component of 1.1 million ounces averaging 5.4 g/t Au, with almost half — 600,000 ounces — contained in high-grade veins grading 9.3 g/t Au. Taseko invites public comment on proposed Prosperity Mine plan

Taseko Mines is inviting public discussion on its revised plan for developing a controversial gold-copper mine in British Columbia. Taseko announced in February it is taking another run at Prosperity after the federal government rejected it last fall.
