Ausenco wins C$237 million Gibraltar copper project in Canada

Ausenco has been awarded a contract to manage the C$237 million expansion of the Gilbraltar copper-molybdenum project in Canada for Taseko Mine. Ausenco’s Minerals & Metals business will manage on an EPCM basis the Gibraltar Development Plan 3 (GDP3) expansion, which will include the construction of a 30,000 t/d concentrator to complement the existing, currently operating, 55,000 t/d facility.

Following the approval by Wesizwe shareholders in March 2011 of the total mine development financing solution offered by the Chinese consortium of Jinchuan, CAD Fund and Micawber, TWP Projects, a Basil Read Group company, has submitted a full EPCM proposal to the company for the new twin vertical shafts (the Main and Ventilation Shafts), a new plant and all surface infrastructure at its Frischgewaagd-Ledig Complex near Rustenburg, South Africa.

EIA forecasts coal to remain king of American electric power generation

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts coal to remain the dominant fuel for power generation until 2035 despite projected strong increases in natural gas and renewable fuel use over the same period. EIA’s revised Annual Energy Outlook, released last week, shows coal’s share of the market dropping to 43% in 2035 from 45% in 2009, but remaining the largest fuel source as gas use is forecast to rise to 25% from 23%.

Sandvik and Shandong Energy JV for underground coal equipment

Sandvik Mining and Construction and Shandong Energy Machinery in Xintai, Shandong Province, China, have signed an agreement to form a 50/50 owned joint venture for the production and sales of coal mining equipment. The joint venture is expected to be established within six months, following customary regulatory approvals.

Metso wins processing equipment deal for Kaunisvaara iron ore project

Northland Resources has contracted Metso to supply the mineral processing equipment and services for the two processing lines at Northland’s Kaunisvaara iron ore project in northern Sweden. The order is valued at $293 million and covers the complete equipment package for the processing plant, including two primary gyratory crushers, two AG mills, seven vertical grinding mills (VTM 3000), magnetic separators and seven VPA press filters.

Orbite identifies rare earths in its Grande-Vallée deposit

Exploration Orbite VSPA has discovered the presence of high-value byproducts such as scandium, gallium and other important rare earth elements in its Grande-Vallée deposit in the Gaspé region of Quebec, all of which offer strong economic potential for the company and for Canada, the company believes.
