ABB to help drive the world’s newest copper mine

ABB has supplied a vast array of power and automation solutions for Antofagasta’s new flagship Esperanza copper mine in Chile. The solutions include three of the world’s largest gearless mill drives, process and electrical control systems, power quality systems, a substation and an integrated operations center that controls the entire production process, including onshore facilities at a purpose-built port 145 kilometers from the mine.

Collie coal miners threaten strikes over hot seating plan

It is reported that coal miners at Griffin coal are threatening industrial action over moves to introduce hot seating by extending workers hours. The plan by the new Indian owners Lanco would see miner work 12.5 hours per shift so pre-start meetings and handover procedures do not halt production at the operation, The West reports.

Bulgarian coal miners launch symbolic strike

Novinite reported that on Saturday, miners at Bulgaria's state owned Maritsa Iztok Mines launched a symbolic protest, warning that effective strike was in store, after talks failed Friday.

Caterpillar makes further inroads into Chinese longwall coal

Caterpillar is building on its Bucyrus acquisition with the recent signing of another contract to deliver an automated longwall coal plow system to Chinese company Gasification Co part of Lvliang Dongyi Group. The system marks the 11th plow system from DBT/Bucyrus/Caterpillar for delivery to Chinese mines. The system will be delivered in the first quarter of 2013 and will go to work in the Xinyan mine in Shanxi province

LME copper rises as US data improves outlook

London copper rose on Friday, erasing this week's declines, after jobs data pointed to a recovery in the US economy and offset concerns that the euro zone crisis is dragging demand growth lower.
