India, China and Russia will be driving uranium’s future

Although its future is unclear, significant expansion of nuclear power capacity is projected to occur in non-OECD countries, especially China, India and Russia, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The government agency released its International Energy Outlook 2011 last week. "China, Russia, and India account for the largest increment in world net installed nuclear power from 2008 to 2035: China adds 106 gigawatts of nuclear capacity over the period, Russia 28 gigawatts, and India 24 gigawatts."

Senior management at Avalon Rare Metals injured in plane crash

Avalon Rare Metals Inc. (TSX:AVL)(NYSE Amex:AVL) said that three of its staff and four visitors were injured in the crash of Arctic Sunwest's Twin Otter floatplane in Yellowknife on Thursday. All seven passengers were injured during the crash, but the company said none of the injuries are life-threatening. No other information was provided.

Oil sands and shale oil set to grow by 4.6% per year through to 2035

The unconventional liquid fuel industry, like oil sands and shale oil, is projected to grow 4.6 per year through to 2035, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The government agency released its International Energy Outlook 2011 last week. The report states that geopolitics and regulation will help the unconventional liquid fuel sector sustain growth for the next 20 years and beyond.

Namakwa Diamonds sells diamond operations in Congo for US$6.25 million

Namakwa Diamonds sold its mining and exploration operations for US$6.25 million to Hall Farm Avenue Limited, the corporate vehicle of a management team lead by the Company’s DRC Country Manager, James Tregenza. Payment will be settled over a 5-year period, with a minimum payment of US$1.25m required in each year during this period.

Teck to spend $685 million on upgrades

Teck Resources Limited (NYSE: TCK) will invest $210 million at its Trail Operations to increase its capacity to recycle end-of-life electronic waste and $475 million in a mill modernization project at Highland Valley Copper. Both operations are located in British Columbia. The No. 4 Furnace Project at Trail Operations includes the construction of a new slag fuming furnace and settling furnace that will integrate into the existing lead smelting process. Construction on the project will begin in 2012 with completion scheduled for 2014.

World markets are in the red

World markets tumbled overnight as bad news mounts and investors turn pessimistic. The Hang Seng fell 4.95%, the S&P ASX was down 2.63% and the Shanghai composite index is down -2.78%. Even gold, the traditional fear trade, was off three percent and trading at $1,739.
