Dr Con Fauconnier a noted visionary, innovative, caring leader, and authority on underground fires was inducted into the Joburg Indaba’s SA Mining Hall of Fame in Johannesburg this week.

The mining industry, more than any other industrial sector, is under constant pressure to demonstrate continued commitment to responsible environmental management and to the concept of sustainable development. There are currently several pieces of environmental legislation being updated or coming into force, with which the industry will be obliged to comply, such as the NEMA regulations - including new legislation around mine rehabilitation - and the Carbon Tax Act.

South Africa has a unique history in mining, and is a nation partly built on the exploration and development of its resources. Unfortunately, through social, political and economic consequences and challenges, the industry has also been hit by strikes and conflict.

In recognition and celebration of key role players in South Africa’s mining industry, the Joburg Indaba launched its SA Mining Hall of Fame at a gala dinner on the eve of the forth Joburg Indaba at the Inanda Club, Johannesburg.

Ahead of the fourth edition of the Joburg Indaba, stakeholders of the mining industry are upbeat and focused on becoming internationally competitive to secure the future of this key driver of the South African economy.
