The 7,000-hectare Birch project is one of the company’s 17 properties across 42,500 hectares in Canada's Yukon Territory.

The moves are the latest signs that Glencore and Trafigura Group, which have long dominated metals trading, are being challenged by an influx of new competition.

The $2.7 billion capex project contains 4.2 billion lb. copper, 74.6 million lb. of molybdenum and 15.5 million oz. of silver.

Known as Korali-Sud, the new project will be managed under Mali’s new mining code.
