A leach tank with 1,450 cubic metre capacity failed at Ranger Mine spilling mud, water, ore and acid.
Workers discovered the breech at 1 a.m. Saturday, a hole in the side of Leach Tank 1. A crane attempted to block the hole but was toppled when the tank gave way. No personnel were injured.
Energy Resources Australia (ASX:ERA), Ranger Mine’s operators, said the spill was contained.
“Containment systems stopped the flow, and this has meant there is no impact to the surrounding environment,” said ERA General Manager Operations Tim Eckersley.
“ERA is focusing on clean up and recovery, and the protection of the environment and the health and safety of our people remains paramount.”
The company said that it is “. . . confident that the nearby Kakadu National Park will not be impacted as a result of this incident.” The park, which surrounds Ranger Mine, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Production at the company has ceased. Federal and territorial regulators are investigating the incident.
The company said that “. . . is taking this incident extremely seriously.”
On its Facebook page the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation called the accident a “catastrophic failure.”
The company opened 9.62% lower at A$1.17 .

Glad to hear the backup systems worked. Hope the miners and other workers are OK. Thanks for the update. Found the non-profit interesting.

It was only last week that I read that the Qld’ gov’ were considering mining Uranium again, and then this happens ,what a disgrace , you can not dispose of the waste from this mineral in a safe manner , that doesn’t matter as long as a lot of money is generated to try to recover the wasted public monies spent on monumental blunders that ignorant over educated buffoons { politicians & corporate executives} have created in they’re quest for glory & to generate huge amounts of money for the shareholders at the expense of the ecology ,i,e flora & fauna & us , absolutely no consideration is given to the future generations of this unique and beautiful land in which we live as long as the shareholders turn a dollar, well they’ll need a dollar or two to survive somehow , you can’t eat money or drink it for that matter , please in the name of the future of this land stop the rape of it and look upward , yes upwards at the sun that has been burning and generating life giving rays since creation ,, we can’t live without it , I think that even the over educated ones amongst us realize this but they also know that they can’t monopolize on this source of power so it goes to the backburner , don’t leave it there too long because all the gasses and other pollutants you’re emitting will soon block it’s FREE, yes FREE LIFE GIVING RAYS , then we’ll have to create a new source of energy to see us through , hmmm, .

do you live in a house, drive a car and use fuel, wear a watch, clothing, do you use power or gas, drink alcohol, if the answer is no to these and any other modern items we all use in modern day society. By all means comment.
If not wake the F@#$ up and think about it.

Must feel good writing the mantra good sounding words, flora fauna environment global warming from the comfort of a nice air conditioned house and the government paying for everything , hospitals, roads, welfare for retards etc etc It just happens that most of the “retards” getting monies for nothing are the most ardent activists for flora and fauna , glowing the rounded words in their plenty spare time. Are these people aware that somebody must work really hard to produce electricity and all the goods they use as well as paying taxes so the government pay their welfare? Mining and farming are really the only export producing industries in australia , the rest are just recycling these monies. There are tens of layers of useless parasites recycling the monies made by just very few hardworking farmers and miners. If all of this “new” industry parasites – activists, naturist consultants, environmentalists, cultural specialists, “artists”, would disappear tomorrow, nobody would even notice and certainly the economy would suddenly improve as well as the national deficit disappearing as well. And instead of bowing to the miners and farmers, these parasites continuously demonise and criticise and bite the hands that feed them. Even this article is good example : it quotes the “Gundjelini Aboriginal Corporation” – really ?! Is there any example of any Aboriginal Corporation which created anything of any value or was able to run any business without billions of taxpayers monies wasted or stolen???
