In uncertain times, global metals exchange volumes surge

The London Metal Exchange (LME) on Saturday banned from its system Russian metal produced on or after April 13.

A UK official said London expected any market disruption to stabilize quickly.

An index of deals compiled by CRU shows the discount for copper ore – known as treatment and refining charges – has fallen to a record low in data going back to 1989.

The tension between demand and supply, coming as capital costs at mines rise while copper prices are slower to catch up, leads to significant price projections and concerns over the metal's availability.

Copper mining has been halted in France for more than two decades.

Orla said it had notified authorities of its intentions with the hope of motivating talks between the parties.

Tin is now up by 27% since the start of the year.

Futures on the London Metal Exchange have risen more than 12% so far this year.
