India bans use of dirtier coal alternative in New Delhi area
India's top court on Tuesday banned the use of petroleum coke, a dirtier alternative to coal, in and around New Delhi in a bid to clean the air in one of the world's most polluted cities.
HD Mining, the Vancouver-based company that in early October sparked controversy and legal actions with its plan to bring up to 2,000 Chinese miners for its proposed $300 million coal mine, won’t replace all of its foreign workers by Canadians at least until 2026.
Coal is likely to overtake oil as the world's main source of energy in the next five years, with potentially devastating effects in the environment, says the International Energy Agency (IEA).
