Scottish bacteria may help clean up acid mine drainage
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh discovered that bacteria found in areas polluted by acid mine drainage had the potential to detoxify the environment.

The plant in Gateshead makes use of water-filled, disused coal workings 150 metres beneath the town centre and harnesses geothermal energy from mine water.
