Mega-polluting coal plans clash with Australia’s climate goals
A proposed pipeline of coal mine projects in Australia, the world’s second-biggest exporter of the fuel, are threatening to lock in decades of new carbon emissions.
The proposals involve buying coal plants in developing economies in Asia and operating them for as long as 15 years before closing the sites ahead of current schedules.
In the short term, emissions are on a rising trend, notwithstanding a temporary decline during the covid-19 pandemic, putting the world a long way off track to reach zero emissions by 2050.
According to Wood Mackenzie, ramping up battery metals production is also important to limit the average global warming to two degrees above pre-industrial levels by 2040.
