As a rapid use workshop maintenance or storage building Cocoon 365 is a new design of structure from Cocoon Architecture that can deploy repeatedly on mining and mineral exploration sites without the use of external contractors. Company founder Michael Brady originally designed the Cocoon 365 product initially as a permanent solution for event spaces. However, after studying the market for rapidly deployed structures and having teamed up with some mechanical engineers, the team realised that a design for a mobile Cocoon may be applicable to other sectors, including construction and mining.
Designed for the end user who hires structures to deploy directly, the key to the Cocoon concept attractiveness is its speed and ease of deployment. A 9 m x 30 m structure can be deployed by two personnel in under two hours. The Cocoon is also not constructed from multiple independent parts like traditional tent systems, rather it is unfolded and locked. The structure is an integrated system with structural frame, membrane cover and electrical services built into one large structure that is deployed for the most part by remote control from a bespoke trailer. The trailer acts a transport, storage and deployment device negating the need for any lifting equipment and the whole unit is less than 3.5 t complete, allowing towing by a pick-up. The company believes that Cocoon could come into its own in the mining sector as temporary/relocatable workshop, storage or maintenance building. With the frames pre-wired for electrical services and the ability for mining staff to be shown very quickly how to deploy the Cocoon, the solution has to potential to offer great flexibility at mobile camps and remote minesites. The company said it is currently ”working with mining companies in Canada and Australia on variants of the Cocoon design for specific in-the-field requirements.”
