Giant mine pit ‘swallowing’ 400-year-old Peruvian town
The Peruvian city of Cerro de Pasco, perched high up in the Andes, is about to sink — literally and metaphorically — into the deeps of a half-century-old, open-pit zinc and lead mine.
The six-year investment blueprint includes a $2.3bn expansion to existing smelting capacity in Sonora and $815m for major new electricity lines for the Baja California peninsula.
In December, the government announced a multibillion-dollar project that would hold some of the nation’s most valuable gold, platinum, chrome and nickel mines.
