Canadian gov expects greenhouse gas increase

Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions are set to rise through 2020 with the largest contributions coming from the oil and gas industry, according to Environment Canada.

If continued, the trend will spoil Prime Minister Harper’s pledge to reduce emissions by 17% by 2020 made at Copenhagen in 2009.

Environment Canada predicts an emissions increase from 701 Mt in 2011 to 734 Mt in 2020.

“Canada is moving in the wrong direction on addressing greenhouse gas pollution,” said climate policy analyst P.J. Partington.

“The government has promised Canadians that pollution levels will drop, but Environment Canada is forecasting that they will increase.”

Canada currently is the world’s seventh largest greenhouse gas emitter.
