Breaking: Rio Tinto’s Oyu Tolgoi delayed again

After a jubilant letter yesterday, the president of the Oyu Tolgoi project wrote again to his staff expressing regret that the Mongolian government had requested further delays of international copper shipments:

Colleagues,

I know this is going to disappoint many of you. The government have asked us to postpone our first shipment scheduled for tomorrow, Friday the 21 of June.

Don’t let this get you down. We are ready to ship and we have all our permits. We have done our part. For that, and for so many extraordinary things we have done as a team, we should feel very proud.

I wanted tomorrow to be a celebration for all of you for what we have achieved. We have built a world class mine in just three years. We will have a chance to celebrate, I promise you. But we will only ship when our partners in government indicate their full support for doing so.

Until then, please stay safe. Keep working hard. I am proud to be working with each and every one of you.

Regards,

Cameron McRae
