From energy footnote to oil giant: Infographing the Canadian oil boom

Infographics design firm Visual Capitalist has constructed a very interesting infographic on the Canadian oil boom. Thanks mostly to the northern Alberta oilsands, the amount of crude oil underneath Canadian soil or waters has gushed from a mere 7 billion barrels a decade ago to an astonishing 175 billion barrels. The only countries with more crude oil than Canada are Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.

Centerra Gold posts revised 2012 production forecast for Kumtor Mine

Canada-based gold producer Centerra Gold Inc. (TSX:CG) announced today that increased ice movement in the southeast section of the pit will delay scheduled access to the high grade SB zone. Preliminary engineering analysis now indicates production of 390,000 to 410,000 ounces of gold in 2012 at its Kumtor mine, rather than between 575,000 and 625,000 ounces as previously forecast. The revised production profile will continue to be weighted to the fourth quarter.

GIW Froth Pump prevents airlock shutdowns at Mondo Minerals Talc Plant

GIW Industries, the leader in the design, manufacture and application of heavy-duty, centrifugal slurry pumps, announced that global talc producer Mondo Minerals has installed GIW's High Volume Froth (HVF) pump at its talc processing plant in Outokumpu, Finland. During the pump's first month of operations, the plant was able to stabilize the flotation process and eliminate a safety hazard.

Metals Economics Group pipeline activity index, March 2012

Metals Economics Group (MEG) Pipeline Activity Index (PAI) slid for the third consecutive month in January to its lowest level since mid-2010, before showing some encouraging signs of recovery in February. Gold drilling regained momentum lost during the holidays, and the total number of initial resources announced in January-February matched the highest two-month total since early 2009.
