CALGARY, Dec. 28, 2011 /CNW/ – Athabasca Oil Sands Corp. (TSX: ATH) is pleased to announce that MacKay Operating Corp. (MacKay Opco) has received full regulatory approval from Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board and Alberta Environment and Water for the MacKay River commercial oil sands project.

The company filed the application on December 10, 2009 and MacKay Opco received the final approval on December 23, 2011. To achieve this major milestone, MacKay Opco’s Regulatory and Stakeholder Affairs team effectively dealt with all stakeholders to resolve their concerns and get this commercial oil sands project endorsed by the regulators and the Alberta government.”
The MacKay River project is a 150,000 barrels per day (bbl/d) steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) project with Phase 1 expected to produce 35,000 bbl/d of oil. Construction of the project will begin next month with start-up targeted for 2014.
MacKay Opco is a Calgary-based joint venture between Athabasca (40%) and Cretaceous Oilsands Holdings Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of PetroChina (60%). The company was formed to operate the jointly owned MacKay River oil sands leases.

I figure people who talk about the new world order – its coming slowly – Depending also where you come from you have too belong to that special group who reside in Canada as for the rest of us I feel the the rights of the white anglo saxon have no rights any more – Maybe I should wear a garb then I bet the doors will open. I have never seen so much discrimination against older workers as I have see in supposedly the big shot Province of Ontario

I would like to know why we as a country are seeking outside help in developing the Oil Sands. We have in this country of ours a lot of skilled people. Yet Oil Sand’s companies recruit workers from other countries. Yes, I know a lot of these people don’t have their grade 12, but what dose having your grade 12 got to do with your trade. I’ve worked in the oil sands for the last 4yrs, but when I applied to work for an oil sands company they said I needed my grade 12. I hold two tickets in heavy construction, I have most of my tickets to work there, yet when the oil sands company called and found out I had no grade 12 they would not hire me. Most jobs do not require you to have grade 12, so what makes the oil sands so special?They keep saying how they are short skilled workers, well I call bull crap. There are many skilled workers here that have trade certification and no grade 12. The oil sands needs to get rid of the grade 12 qualification for employment and start hiring more Canadians. And if grade 12 is so important to them then send these new hires to school, the oil sands would have more then enough people in Canada for the work.
