Environmental campaigners are challenging the approval of a coking coal mine in northwest England.
The 10 mines on this list accounted for more than one quarter of U.S. coal production in 2015. They’re run by America’s top coal producers such as Peabody Energy, Arch Coal, Cloud Peak Energy, and Alpha Natural Resources. Peabody Energy’s North Antelope Rochelle mine continues to hold the title for the country’s biggest coal mine in terms of production.
