Iamgold Corp. (TSX: IMG) reported late Thursday afternoon that an incident had occurred at its Rosebel concession in Suriname involving local police and unauthorized artisanal miners, resulting in the death of one of the miners.

Iamgold has notified government authorities and will temporarily suspend mining activities at Rosebel. The concession, covering 170 square kilometres, is 95% owned by the Toronto-based company, with the remaining interest held by the Suriname government.

This is not the first time that operations at Rosebel were involuntarily suspended. Last November, a strike organized by unionized employees forced Iamgold to briefly suspend work at the mine.
