Toronto hosts geosciences conference in October

What is Exploration ’17?

Exploration ‘17 is the sixth of the very successful series of Decennial Mining Exploration Conferences (DMEC), which have been held in the seventh year of every decade starting in 1967. The event runs October 21 – 25, 2017.  Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. The theme of the Exploration ’17 conference is “Integrating the Geosciences: The Challenge of Discovery”, featuring a multi-national, multi-disciplinary technical programme, exhibition, workshops and field schools.

Exploration ’17 provides a forum to focus on the DMEC vision that the successful application of geosciences for mineral exploration will most likely occur when the geoscience disciplines are meaningfully integrated into exploration programs, and that this will occur when geoscientists are collaborating on the challenge of discovery.

Who should attend?

Exploration ’17 provides a unique opportunity for geoscientists at all career stages to gather together and share their knowledge, experience and achievements.  Over the last decade, geoscientists have been faced with increasingly complex and deeper mining environments. Exploration ’17 provides an exciting opportunity to showcase the integration of Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Remote Sensing, critical to improving the utility of data acquisition, processing, interpretation and targeting. We are developing new understanding and knowledge through greater cooperation between the geoscience disciplines. Exploration ‘17 will present the achievements and ongoing progress of the geosciences over the last ten years that meet The Challenge of Discovery.

What are some of the programs and workshops people can attend?

The technical program at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre will feature invited speakers who will address a wide range of geoscience disciplines focused on the Challenge of Discovery, including geology, geochemistry, geophysics and remote sensing.  Plenary sessions with expert panels and speakers will address the evolving business context faced by exploration geoscientists, the state of the art and the importance of combining the geoscience disciplines to improve discovery rates.

Poster papers will be presented throughout the conference that focus more directly on specific technologies and ongoing geoscience research.  A series of case histories will feature the application of geoscience in mining camps throughout the world.

The invited speaker at the Technical Luncheon will be Dr. Richard Hillis, CEO of the Deep Exploration Technologies CRC.  The winners of the Frank Arnott Award Challenge case histories will be announced at the Gala Dinner.

The conference exhibition will feature exhibits from leading mining companies and geoscience service providers.  Delegates will be able to meet industry leaders and collect information and advice to guide exploration efforts.

Tours of the incredible Kirwin Collection at the Royal Ontario Museum will be conducted throughout the conference.

Pre- and post-conference workshops will be held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel.  Delegates will be able to attend half and full day workshop topics covering a wide range of topical geoscience disciplines, including electromagnetics, seismic, petrophysics, indicator minerals, drilling, spectral geology, and effective presentations and much more.

A field school in Sudbury will be conducted during the week before the convention.  Participants will collect, process and interpret geoscience data over a nearby ore deposit.

Exhibitor Registration and the Program Schedule are on the Exploration ’17 website, http://www.exploration17.com.  Delegate Registration will be open on this website in early 2017.

Why did you choose the theme “Integrating the Geosciences”?

Over the past decade, substantial work has been completed on improving the targeting of exploration.  Good litho-structural interpretations that combine geoscience data acquired by geophysicists, geochemists, minerologists and geologists increase the odds that an early stage target can be developed into an economic discovery.

Funding for mineral exploration requires the confidence of management and investors.   Exploration geoscientists need to make recommendations based on decisions made using good science that integrates all available information.

What are some of the advancements in the field of minerals exploration technology that the conference will highlight?

There have been significant advancements in every geoscience discipline, as attested to by the wide range of technical talks and workshop topics during Exploration ’17.
