Fatality at Musselwhite mine, operations suspended

An underground scoop operator was killed today when an unexpected rock fall occured at Goldcorp’s Musselwhite Mine in Northern Ontario.

Operations at Musselwhite Mine are suspended until authorities complete their investigation.

The company says it immediately dispatched first responders and initiated search and rescue operations, however, the scoop was completely covered with material, which led to the fatal injury.

“We are all deeply saddened by this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the individual’s family, friends and colleagues,” said Chuck Jeannes, Goldcorp President and Chief Executive Officer.

“The health and safety of our employees is our highest priority at Goldcorp. We are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the accident, and are offering support to the individual’s family and employees at the mine site.”

Musselwhite Mine, which is 100% owned by Goldcorp, is an underground operation, employing long hole stoping technology.
