Four dead, two injured in a Bosnian coal mine accident

Four coal miners miners were killed and two injured in an overnight accident at an operation in central Bosnia, about 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of Sarajevo.

Arif Zekic, spokesman for the Begici-Bistrani mine in the town of Kakanj, told AP that 28 miners were in the pit when the accident occurred. He added that 22 of them escaped unhurt.

Unfortunately, deadly mishaps are frequent at Bosnian coal mines, which lack of the necessary investment and upgrades since the country’s 1992-95 war.

Last year, five miners died when an earthquake triggered a collapse at the Raspotocje mine in the town of Zenica.

Mining inspectors are currently at the site to investigate the causes of today’s mine disaster.
