April 28, 2009 (Highland, MI) — Magnetic Products, Inc. (MPI) is pleased to announce that Drax Power Station, Britain’s largest coal-fired power station, recently selected Eclipse Magnetics’s Filtramag as the filtration system for an essential component of its pulverizing mills.
MPI is the exclusive distributor of Eclipse Products in the U.S.
The six turbo-generators housed at the Drax Power Station currently supply around 7% of the UK’s electricity needs. Each turbo-generator is supplied with super-heated steam from a dedicated boiler which burns pulverized fuel supplied by ten pulverizing mills. The Filtramag filters lubrication oil used in heavy duty gearboxes fitted to the mills.
Drax engineer Andrew Wilkinson explained, “”Efficient filtration has been proven to considerably extend the working life of each pulverizing mill’s heavy duty gearbox. Filtramag’s outstanding filtration capability, maintenance friendly characteristics and short investment pay-back period matched our needs.”
To minimize maintenance downtime, Filtramag filtration systems are fitted along with a circulation pump, a motorized cooling fan and a thermostatic temperature control onto an interchangeable transportable platform containing quick-release couplings.
In line with Drax’ commitment to minimize environmental impact, the new Eclipse Magnetics units will help improve recovery of contaminated debris entrained in the lubrication system, allowing better management of toxic waste.
