New book ‘102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground‘ spotlights global reclamation projects
Stories of reinvented coal mining regions, regenerated communities and rebuilt ecosystems are told in a new book published this month.
Alliant Energy’s (NYSE:LNT) subsidiary Interstate Power and Light, Iowa’s second largest power company, has reached a settlement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), that will see it spending over $7 million in pollution control technologies and fines.
The power firm will install and continuously operate cutting-edge pollution controls at its biggest Iowa plants, in Ottumwa and Lansing.
The company has also agreed to retire or convert to natural gas its plants in Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Burlington, Clinton and Marshalltown.
When fully implemented, the changes are expected to cut annual emissions of sulphur dioxide by tens of thousands of tons.
The company’s spending corresponds to a $1.1 million fine and further $6 million on environmental mitigation projects.
