Rio Tinto signs $20M IT services deal with Empired

Australian listed IT Services Company Empired Limited has secured a contract to provide Application Managed Services to global mining leader Rio Tinto.

The contract, including options, will have a total term of 5 years and an estimated value of $20m. Under the contract Empired will provide application support and project services for over 170 unique applications, spanning a number of technologies including Legacy Platforms, Oracle, Microsoft .Net, Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft CRM.

The applications are largely technical systems used in the management of field operations spanning mining, processing, rail and port facilities.

Commenting on the contract award Empired’s Managing Director, Russell Baskerville, said “We are delighted to be trusted by an organisation as prestigious as Rio Tinto to manage applications that are critical to the efficient operation of one of the world’s largest mining operations.”

“This award speaks volumes about the quality of services currently being provided by Empired to Rio Tinto under the TST program and I would like to thank all our staff for their professionalism and dedication to Empired and our clients.”

“I am also pleased to see our extended Microsoft capability through the acquisitions of OBS, eSavvy and Intergen leveraged to provide a seamless and cohesive solution to Rio Tinto. These acquisitions have been pivotal to our strategy and this win vindicates our strategy to leverage the broader capability to win large multi-year contracts.”

“Rio Tinto continues to present a great opportunity to Empired and we are focused on working with them to identify areas where we can assist Rio Tinto to deliver on its stated business objectives.”

In closing Mr Baskerville said “I would like to thank Rio Tinto for their trust in our organisation, it is a pleasure delivering services for them and we are committed to delivering an exceptional outcome under this new contract.”

This contract award quickly follows the recent announcements of a Managed Services contract with Toyota and a $12m contract with Ministry for Primary Industries in New Zealand. Empired continues to have a strong pipeline of large strategic contracts being pursued and is confident of securing additional new contract wins to be announced in the near term.
