BHP posts second straight year of record iron ore production, beats estimates
The world's largest listed miner said iron ore output from Western Australia on a 100% basis was 76.8 million tonnes in the three months to June 30.
The Edmonton Journal published an article last week on the Genesee 1, 2 and 3 coal-fired generating facilities, located not far from the Alberta capital.
[Last] week, Capital Power officials gave the Journal a tour of the Genesee 1, 2 and 3 coal-fired generating facilities 85 kilometres southwest of Edmonton, where the view from the rooftop shows how close Genesee is to two other coal-fired power plants, Keephills and Sundance.
Genesee 1 and 2 (built in 1994 and 1989) have the capacity to generate 860 megawatts of electricity. Genesee 3, the first coal-fired unit in Canada to use high-efficiency “supercritical” boiler technology, has a capacity to generate 495 MW. Owned jointly with TransAlta, it was commissioned in 2005.
The 24/7 operation produces 5 million tonnes per year. In Alberta, 43 percent of the province’s electricity comes from coal.
