Alteration mapping and identification of mineral alteration zones with an oreXpress™ field spectrometer

Lawrence, MA – July 24, 2013 – Quickly and accurately detect mineral zones of alteration with an oreXpress™ or oreXpress Platinum field spectrometer with EZ-ID™ mineral identification software.

As geologists work to better understand the geology and alteration patterns of the area they are exploring, oreXpress spectrometers with EZ-ID can provide detailed data by measuring reflectance from outcrops, chips, or drill core. With oreXpress geologists can identify:

  • Micas – muscovite-paragonite, biotite, phlogopite
  • Chlorites – variations in iron-magnesium chlorite, epidote
  • Amphiboles – tremolite, hornblende, actinolite
  • Sulfates – jarosite, gypsum
  • Clays – illite, illite-smectite, kaolinite, dickite
  • Carbonates – calcite, dolomite, ankerite, siderite
  • Tourmaline – Fe-tourmaline, tourmaline

By matching unknown samples against a known spectral library (EZ-ID includes USGS and SpecMIN libraries for almost 4,000 spectra), a geologist can quickly identify an alteration  mineral that may not be readily apparent to even the finest, trained human eye. The oreXpress is portable (lightweight, easy for a single user to operate), designed for the field, but also well-suited for core logging, where a single user could identify and log 400 meters per day.

All oreXpress files are saved in ASCII format for easy import into 3rd party analysis software for mine planning, mineral mapping, and 3D imaging. With mineral identification accomplished in seconds, opreXpress allows a geologist to scan more area and collect more critical data for  planning a drilling strategy that will maximize the return on investment.
