VULKAN Drive Tech shows robust and cost-efficient drive solutions for municipal vehicles and crushing machines

Under the slogan “Torque for heavy duties” VULKAN Drive Tech is showcasing its wide product spectrum for highest demands in disposal technology at the IFAT, the world’s leading trade fair forwater, sewage, waste and raw materials management. The leading provider of high-quality drive and braking systems is focusing here on drive solutions for municipal vehicles and crushing machines.

Applications for commercial vehicles in the municipal area include, alongside the disposal of traditional household waste, construction debris, scrap and bulky waste, also the treatment of recyclable materials, container services and duct cleaning. Increasing demands on operating efficiency and environmental performance require fuel-efficient and reliable drive solutions. VULKAN Drive Tech couplings have long proved their worth in the commercial vehicle sector across the world, providing for trouble-free drive and thus full protection from wear and damage of high-quality machines. All couplings are characterized not only by a high power density and durability, but are also easy and comfortable to mount.

In some commercial vehicles, a power take-off provides a mostly switchable mechanical power source on an auxiliary output of the gearbox. The mechanical power can be used directly via a cardan shaft and drive belt transmissions or hydraulic pumps. If the drive machine is a diesel engine, a highly flexible coupling is required to shift the resonances and dampen torsional vibrations. This highly flexible coupling protects the cardan shaft and machine being driven against impermissible vibratory loads.

VULKAN Drive Tech shows the highly elastic VULKARDAN L coupling at the IFAT 2014. The main components of this special intermediate coupling for cardan shafts are the highly flexible elements and inner and outer couplings parts that are supported against / in each other. The elements have a high torsional flexibility and good damping properties. The bearing absorbs the weights of the cardan shaft and the reaction forces it generates. The slide bearing is maintenance-free. The short and compact design results in only minor crankshaft loads even in cases of large deflection angles of the cardan shafts. In general, the couplings can be used up to a deflection angle of 9° of the cardan shafts. The VULKARDAN L is available in various sizes with a nominal torque range of 0.16 to 12.5 kNm.

The MEGIFLEX B coupling is used in a special dual cardan design as an alternative to a cardan shaft coupling combination, if the angular misalignment between the input and output sides to be bridged is less than 2° – 3°. The highly flexible MEGIFLEX B is torsionally flexible, shock-absorbing, flexible on all sides and noise-damping. With a wide variety of models available, it is a coupling that meets the most diverse requirements. The flexible element with its axial and radial clamping feature offers a number of designs, e. g. flange/flange, shaft/shaft, cardanic shafts. MEGIFLEX B couplings are available in various sizes with a nominal torque range of 0.01 kNm to 3.12 kNm. Plug-in couplings are used for direct coupling for example of hydraulic pumps on the auxiliary output shaft of the gearbox. With the FLEXOMAX family of couplings, VULKAN Drive Tech offers a large portfolio of axially pluggable, maintenance-free shaft couplings for vibration-damping power transmission.

There are different drive concepts for shredding systems consisting of shredders, breakers or mills and the appropriate conveyor systems for material removal: The standard system with motor, belt drive, coupling and gearbox has proved its reliability in the majority of applications. The particularly robust drive system without transmission with large belt pulley and coupling is useful for shredding mainly large, massive and possibly also heavily contaminated materials. For these applications, VULKAN Drive Tech shows at the IFAT 2014 the highly flexible couplings VULKARDAN E and VULASTIK L. Both couplings ensure optimal damping of resonances in the drive and thus protect the connected machines. The couplings are available in different rubber qualies with linear spring characteristics and, alternatively, in silicon with progressive spring characteristics.
