Russia seizes 57,000 diamonds and gemstones from accused official

Yevgeniya Vasilyeva loses 57,000 diamonds and gemstones

Russian law enforcement officials have confiscated over 40 pounds of jewels from a former Russian defence official while raiding her home on Friday, the Russian Investigative Committee reported on its website.

Yevgeniya Vasilyeva was the director of property relations at the Ministry of Defense until 2012 when she was charged with a slew of crimes including money laundering and abusing official powers.

The accused was allegedly involved in selling $124 million worth of state property for underrated prices.

In attempt to reimburse the state for the losses, Vasilyeva’s jewellery was seized, including 57,000 diamonds and gemstones.

Military investigators also confiscated an art collection which proved to be of little value.

In total, the seized property is valued at $3.9 million.

According to Bloomberg, Vasilyeva faces a maximum sentence of 12 years in prison. Russian news agency RIA Novosti reports that she is now under house arrest “in her 13-bedroom luxury apartment in Moscow.”
