UK Royal Mint opens facility to recover gold from e-waste
The move would provide a more sustainable source of the precious metal and reduce dependence on traditional mining methods.
Earlier this month, a Dutch firm launched the world’s first conflict-free phone: A mobile device made with ethically-extracted minerals.
The Dutch company Fairphone released 25,000 phones in mid-September. So far just over 16,000 have sold in pre-orders.
Fairphone argues that we don’t have a clue where our stuff comes from or who made it.
As part of the ethical process, the phone’s tin and tantalum come from “conflict-free” sources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The company guarantees that the minerals come from mines that are not run by armed groups.
This first model is not 100% ‘fair’ however – the company says it did not expect to achieve this with the first edition.
But with a price tag of about $500, this phone is not for the thrifty.
