Australian coal miners walk off the job after late wages payment

Late payment of wages prompted dozens of workers at Gujarat NRE’s Russell Vale coking coal mine to withdraw their labour on Thursday.

“It’s not the first time it’s happened and the boys have had enough,” one of the workers told Australia Mining.

“People have mortgages to pay and kids to feed, it’s just not on.”

Payment was supposed to go through on Tuesday, according to the worker, who said the same thing had happened only last week.

When pressed by the local union, the CFMEU, the payments were quickly made and the company blamed “tough operating conditions brought about by a drop in the international coal price” for the issue.

Gujarat NRE is involved in mining, processing and marketing of coal products.
