The US Mint inched closer to putting 2013 First Spouse coins on the market after unveiling their designs earlier this week.
There will be five First Spouse coins this year, warned the institution, because President Woodrow Wilson had two wives, Ellen and Edith.
The half-ounce gold coins with $10 face values will depict Ida McKinley, Edith Roosevelt, Helen Taft, Ellen Wilson and Edith Wilson.
The late unveiling of the 2013 first spouse coin designs comes after design candidates for the Edith Wilson coin were rejected in March by the two bodies responsible for reviewing and commenting on possible US Mint coin images — the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee and the Commission of Fine Arts.
These final design images represent those chosen by the Secretary of the Treasury.
The first coin is expected to go on sale this fall.

Good idea, except for giving them a ten dollar face value. They weren’t 10 dollar “wh—s”, even though many people didn’t like them even that much. Come on treasury people!, establish at least a 25% modern bullion/face value for the coins, like at least 250 dollars. Now that is a respectful number even if some of the ladies, I hear, were not much better than the 10 dollar ones. Thank God we have the US Mint who allows us small timers to own bullion at a reasonable price!!! Though appealing again to the “weaker” sex who control most of the American wealth is not my cup of tea, it is a good financial/sales idea. Power to the People, I say, even if they are ex-presidents wives. How about five dollar ones for their mistresses and one-nighters. We could get a lot of gold in circulation with J F Kennedy’s alone. THAT’S IT, a Marilyn Monroe full featured, US government minted gold coin. Wow, we could make a mint! ……. Excuse the pun, son.
