Mine equipment company gives 32 employees the chop, cites industry downturn

Joy Mining Machinery has let go 32 workers from its New South Wales (NSW) Australia plant, citing industry downturn.

Joy’s HR director said the number of redundancies was smaller than originally anticipated after the company began planning for cost cuts last month.

“Have a look at what is happening in the industry. Rio has closed its Brisbane office entirely, Xstrata Coal are restructuring…if our customers are significantly reducing their workforce, that’s going to have a big impact on us.”

Ten staff were forced out while another twenty two accepted voluntary redundancies.
