Roxy Downs Sun reports that a study, conducted by the National Centre for Vocational Education Reasearch (NCVER), shows that Australian miners invested in the training and education of Australians to work in the industry. According to the study, $1.147 billion were spent on training in 2011/12.
The study showed clearly that the sector’s education and training budget is significant, spending 5.5 per cent of payroll on training, which is five times relevant government training benchmarks for the employment of 457 visa holders and the defunct one per cent national Training Guarantee Levy.
South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy chief executive Jason Kuchel said the study was important to dispel the incorrect presumptions by some individuals, that mining companies looked to overseas for ready trained workers.
