Agreement on Development of Mining Robots

As reported on bizjournals.com, an agreement was signed by the Robotics Institute at the Carnegie Mellon University and the mining company Anglo American PLC with the aim to develop new mining robots. The company’s Technology Development Group will be working on the new technology with the National Robotics Engineering Center (NREC) and Field Robotics Center for the next five years.

“This agreement will break new ground in mining technology,” said Dimi Apostolopoulos, principle investigator and senior systems scientist at NREC, in a written statement. “We will apply robotics to underground mining tasks that are perilous and extremely challenging for humans. Our robotic solutions will improve productivity through innovations in processes and technologies.”
