In 2013 several major mining projects will be carried out in Chile.
In February, Lumina Copper will initiate production of copper cathodes at the Caserones mine.
During 1H 2013, Copec Group’s and Ultramar’s Mina Invierno coal project, located in Isla Riesco, will initiate operations. The project involves an investment of USD 180 million.
In 2H 2013, Barrick Gold is scheduled to initiate production at the Pascua Lama mine.
GoldCorp and New Gold are scheduled to start construction for the El Morro gold project in September, with an investment of USD 3.9 billion. The mine will be located in Huasco.
In 4Q 2013, Kinross will close its gold and silver mine La Coipa due to its depletion. In this period, Codelco expects to initiate production at the Ministro Hales mine, where there are reserves of around 1.3 million tons of minerals. Codelco will produce 170,000 metric tons of fine copper and 300 tons of silver per year.
