Mining’s old guard needs strong medicine
A new report details subpar investor returns in the mining industry over the last decade, particularly big cap diversified companies which have not adapted to new realities.
The story of George Wright and Scott Lomu, a pair of former American real estate agents who saw business evaporate when the housing bubble burst in the US, seems taken from a movie.
Both men, whose debts exceeded $1 million, made the decision to head to the gold-rich West African jungles of Ghana on a potentially lucrative mining mission, risking their lives to strike it rich.
Their hazardous adventure can now be seen on the series debut of Discovery Channel’s “Jungle Gold” on Oct. 26.
“Armed neighbours, miles of broken roads, roadblocks manned by Ghanaian gangs, and shady and ruthless gold buyers are among the daily hurdles they must face and overcome to succeed in their plan to safely escape Ghana with enough gold to secure their families’ futures,” Discovery teases.

Aside from the damage to local areas, environmental or otherwise, the fact that the producers of this show and many others similar to it, ‘reality’ does more to harm the image of not only the countries and people involved but it makes us all react to mere hype to sell these shows. They all think we are stupid and they will continue to treat us to this form of ‘ trash tv ‘ as long as we keep purchasing their advertisers products to support this nonsense.
The sensational nature of each of these type shows, i.e. Swamp Logger,Bering Sea Gold, Gold Rush, Loggers, etc. is the only thing about any of these stories that they call sell to the public. The day to day operations of these and many other small businesses involve all sorts of risk , reward and adventure, but to sensationalize it to this point is plain stupidity on the producers part. While interesting, it would be more so if they would stay to the documentary aspect of these type of activites and present it in a way that would be informative, insiteful and ecucational.
Sorry for the rant, I have been there and done that, so I know from experience.

Is so sad to see or watch the blatant destruction of our natural forest and rivers, dispossession local farmers of their lands and means of livelihood and calling it the two risk their lives in search of Gold……Is this fair? We just watched the show and we are very saddened. A lot of questions come into our minds over what is actually going on……..We are doing our own investigations and we want to question Ghanaian authorities’ involvement in this wanton environmental destruction, pollution and the denial of locals from enjoying their economic rights. We are a community media outfit, we are going to share the news about this insensitivity and determined disregard to how these illegal activities impact the environment, the people, the communities and the nation as a whole. So sad, does anyone care about Africa?

This story is not the Ghana I know. I worked in Ghana as a miner for nearly nine years (1991 – 2000) and bad roads were normal. I hartily agree with Jojo. I felt safer in Ghana while I was than in any city in the USA. Illegal activities by Chinese or Lebanese is just that, criminal. If the Ghanaian lose their patience with these miscreants they get what they deserve. I hope these filmakers apologize to the Ghanaian people and the the Government of Ghana.

True. Ghana is one of the more stable African nations, with a good record of power changing hands peacefully. The country is also Africa’s biggest gold miner after South Africa and one of the continent’s fastest growing economies. Unfortunately, these facts are not often highlighted in the media, particularly on TV.

This story is offensive and sends out the wrong impression about Ghana’s mining industry, there are no armed Ghanaian gangs, except for the crazy Chinese dudes trying to steal the gold from local people, shady buyers are everywhere in the world…This write up is disappointing…

I feel sad as a Ghanaian when I watch these documentaries ….“Armed neighbours?”, “roadblocks manned by Ghanaian gangs?”, “succeed in their plan to safely escape Ghana with enough gold to secure their families’ futures?,” Do I live in Ghana or is this a different Ghana from the Ghana in which I live and work….sad…..misinformation at its best and can Discovery tell us if these two riff-raffs found enough gold to even buy their plane tickets back home?
