Rinehart’s Hancock weighs $3.3 billion iron ore mine project
Hancock acquired a 51% interest in the Mt Bevan project from Legacy Iron Ore Ltd. and Hawthorn Resources.
The Western Australian government has issued a key approval for Toro Energy’s (ASX:TOE) Wiluna uranium project, bringing the proposed mine a large margin closer to development.
According to AFR Western Australia’s Environment Minister Bill Marmion has given final approval to the project, after receiving advise earlier in the year from the state’s Environmental Protection Authority to approve the development.
The project now needs the assent of federal environment minister Tony Burke in order to obtain the full set of regulatory approvals, as well as the go-ahead from the Toro board to proceed.
Western Australia currently has no active uranium mines, despite the cancellation of a six-year ban on uranium mining by the Liberal state government in 2008.
Although the state Labor party remains opposed to uranium mining, it has said it will not rescind approvals should it win the state election in March.
