Government officials told reporters today that Zambia aims to start publicly declaring the entirety of its mining revenues by the end of this year amid heightened efforts to increase transparency throughout the sector.
The board of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) has meanwhile announced that Zambia is compliant with the organization’s standards.
“EITI compliance means that the country has an effective process for annual disclosure and reconciliation of all revenues from its extractive sector, allowing citizens to see how much their country receives from oil, gas and mining companies,” EITI said.
In 2009, Zambia reportedly received over USD 500 million from its mining sector. Mining companies currently operating in Zambia include First Quantum Minerals, Glencore International, Vedanta Resources and Barrick Gold Corp.
