Historic furnace shaft restored with help of Trolex

Making Sense of Mining is an exciting project that has enabled the National Coal Mining Museum in West Yorkshire, to conserve its historic furnace shaft and extend and revitalise its unique underground tour. Trolex, leaders in gas monitoring systems, has generously donated to the cause.

A furnace shaft was one of the ways that early mines secured sufficient breathable air for miners far below the ground. It acted like a chimney, where the furnace, at the bottom of the shaft, drew air through the workings. The Museum’s furnace shaft has been fully conserved to preserve it for the future.

Dave Vernon and Gary Christopher of Trolex, presented the cheque to Baroness Morris of Yardley, Chair of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, as part of Trolex’s commitment to the mining industry.

Liz Orme, Development Officer at the Museum, commented, “ I would like to say a big thank you for the generous donation from Trolex towards the Museum’s Making Sense of Mining project. We really appreciate Trolex’s support in helping us to keep coal mining alive.”

The shaft now has a glass cover, enabling visitors to look down its full 140-metres depth. At the same time the lamproom displays have been refurbished. The lamproom was once the colliery workshop and, even with its new role, the Museum has tried to keep a feel of the working mine around it.
