Dumas receives another safety innovation award from OMCSA

TORONTO, 23 August 2012 – Dumas Contracting Ltd. (“Dumas”) is pleased to announce that the company is a recipient of the 2012 Safety Innovation Award, presented by the Ontario Mine Contractors Safety Association (OMCSA). Dumas received the award for developing an innovative new tool and technique to re‑rail track locomotives in underground mines.

Locomotives can de-rail frequently due to changing underground conditions. Re-tracking a locomotive usually requires a five-step process that is dangerous and time consuming. The process involves the use of jacks, blocking and the collection of heavy timbers, all of which is inherently high risk and can lead to strain or pinch-point injuries.

After first seeing a similar concept at a mine in Quebec, Dumas streamlined and perfected what is now referred to as ‘The Re-railer Bar’. The bar is affixed to underground locomotives at all times and, if a locomotive de-rails, the bar is used to propel the unit back onto the tracks. The bar effectively eliminates the hazards associated with the traditional re-railing process and can shave hours off of re-railing time.

“We are honoured to receive this prestigious OMCSA award for our re-railing solution,” said Burger Greeff, CEO, Dumas. “At Dumas, we empower our employees to proactively solve safety challenges. The re-railing project demonstrates our employees’ ingenuity and dedication to safety.”

This is the second OMCSA award for Dumas. In 2010, the company was recognized for developing a new piece of equipment – a caged crosshead called The Dumas Crosshead Design – to safely transport miners underground for shaft-sinking. The crosshead prevents workers from sticking their limbs or heads out of the bucket that lowers them into the shaft, ultimately preventing injuries or fatalities.

Roger Belair, Dumas’ recently appointed HSE Director, is proud of the company’s innovative approach to safety and is helping take the company’s safety culture to the next level. “As a growing global contracting company, our safety challenge is unique: On a rolling basis, we need to educate, train and empower new employees to strive for our safety standard of Zero Harm. To make this possible, we are rolling out new tools such as more thorough safety reporting procedures and company-wide weekly safety shares.”

Since the company’s inception in 1994, Dumas has been committed to developing world-class safety policies and procedures, rolled out consistently across all of the company’s projects globally.
